Description of the genus

Hemiparasitic herbs or subshrubs, turning black on drying. Leaves mainly opposite, entire, pinnatisect or 2-pinnatisect, ± sessile. Flowers in terminal spikes or solitary and axillary. Bracts leaf-like. Calyx 4-5-lobed. Corolla 5-lobed, salver-shaped; limb 2-lipped with the 2 upper lobes united and smaller than the lower. Stamens 4. Anthers strictly with 1 theca. Fruit a capsule or berry.

Worldwide: 15 species, occurring from East Africa southwards to South Africa
