Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs or small sub-shrubs, branched, thickly hairy. Leaves alternate, sometimes lower ones opposite, entire or toothed. Capitula radiate, disciform or discoid, solitary on axillary or terminal, rarely bracteate peduncles. Involucre hemispherical to campanulate; phyllaries in 2-7 rows. Ray florets reduced to one row; corolla blue, purple or white, tube cylindrical. Disc florets corolla yellow or white, sometimes flushed reddish-purple. Pappus almost always consisting of bristles and a row of persistent scales.

Worldwide: 12 species in southern Africa.
