Description of the genus

Many-stemmed, sparsely to much branched erect to spreading, sometimes spinescent, silky greyish, aromatic shrubs. Leaves ericoid, mostly opposite, sometimes alternate, often fascicled, entire or pinnatisect with 1-7 lobes. Capitula radiate or disciform, small, sessile to pedunculate, solitary, racemose or in spikes. Involucre subglobose; phyllaries in a single row or 4-6 phyllaries, often with a broad membranous margin. Receptacle paleate to lanceolate, hard and thick or transparent membranous, woolly. Marginal florets 2 or 3, with or without strap-shaped lamina; corolla yellow, white or reddish. Disc florets: corolla tubular, 5-lobed. Pappus absent.

Worldwide: 32 species, endemic to southern Africa excluding Gauteng, Eswatini, and KwaZulu-Natal.
