Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials (in ours). Leaves: lamina crinkled on one margin or on neither margin. Panicle open or contracted, bearing spikelets in groups of 2-3. Spikelets mostly purplish. Glumes usually glabrous. Lower lemma 3-9-nerved. Upper lemma usually with 2-8 transversely arranged tufts of hair, sometimes glabrous, 2-lobed, geniculately awned; callus square to oblong, obtuse. Palea keels winged, often terminating in an auricle.

Worldwide: 12 species occurring in tropical Africa and eastward to Pakistan

Botswana: 1 taxon.
