Description of the genus

Annual dwarf herbs, hairy, with a taproot. Leaves pinnately lobed or pinnatifid, petiolate. Flowers large, solitary. Perianth tube campanulate, shallow; lobes spreading. Petals yellow, imbricate, arising in the throat of perianth tube, alternate with lobes, large. Fruit 5-10 carpels, indehiscent, enclosed in a somewhat woody perianth tube, surrounded by spreading perianth lobes; with spines in the form of little knobs.

Worldwide: About 6 species in Namibia, Botswana and Northern and Western Cape.
