Description of the genus

Bulbous herbs; bulbs 2-20 cm in diameter, subterranean, occasionally above ground. Leaves 2-many per season, shape variable, usually broad and prostrate, produced with or after scapes. Flowers few to many in umbels. Peduncle solid to 35 cms; scape caducous for seed dispersal. Perianth zygomorphic or nearly actinomorphic with a short tube; segments spreading, recurved. Fruit dry, 3-angled with loculicidal dehiscence, seed subglobose.

Worldwide: About 20 species, mainly from southern Africa.

Botswana: 1 taxon.
