Description of the genus

Low shrubs or suffrutices, glabrous or hairy. Leaves alternate or opposite, entire or lobed, sessile or petiolate. Inflorescence 1 to many–flowered, cymose; pedicels erect or recurved in fruit. Calyx 5–15–lobed, segments entire or divided. Corolla yellow or white, usually subrotate to shortly infundibuliform. Fruit a bilocular capsule forming 2 cocci with membranous pericarp; dehiscence usually circumscissile. Seeds angular, reticulate; endosperm absent.

Worldwide: 17 species in temperate U.S.A. and Mexico, temperate South America and South Africa.
