Description of the genus

Shrublets. Leaves alternate. Stipules 0. Flowers small, solitary or in cymes. Perianth segments 5. Stamens 10, in pairs, alternating with the tepals. Ovary superior, consisting of (3-)5 carpels, with 1 pendulous ovule in each loculus. Styles (3) 5. Fruit a leathery loculicidal capsule, splitting at the top. Seeds 1, flattened, shiny and striate.

Worldwide: 15 species in South Africa, extending into Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe
