Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs. Stipules various. Leaves pinnately-nerved: lamina entire or crenate-serrate with a gland near the apex of each tooth on the underside. Flowers bisexual, in axillary panicles (in ours). Sepals (4-)5-8(-12). Petals as many as, and alternating with, the sepals, persistent. Stamens solitary or in groups of 3 before each petal. Styles 2-4. Ovary 1-locular. Fruit a capsule.

Worldwide: 180 species in tropical and warm areas
