Description:
Aquatic perennial with floating leaves grow from a tuberous rhizome. Leaves sub-orbicular to elliptic, deeply cordate and peltate at the base; upper surface green and smooth; lower surface green,red or purple with more or less prominently raised venation; margin sinuate-dentate or sinuate-lobulate, sometimes entire at the apex. Flowers, 6-12 cm in diameter, blue, pinkish or rarely white, on fleshy stems, usually held erect above the surface of the water; sepals 4; petals 14-20 as long as the sepals; stamens c. 100, prolonged beyond the anthers by a white appendage.
Notes: See var. caerulea for comparison.
Derivation of specific name: petersii: named after Professor Wilhelm Peters (1815-1863) of Berlin who collected in Mozambique in the early 19th century.
Habitat: In rivers, lakes and pools.
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Angola, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, probably Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mpumalanga South Africa.
