Description of the genus

Hemiparasitic annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs. Leaves opposite or whorled or upper alternate, usually linear, entire or deeply pinnatifid. Inflorescence a terminal raceme or spike. Calyx 5-toothed, campanulate; the teeth white-woolly inside. Corolla with short tube and 5 spreading lobes. Stamens 4; anthers 2-thecous, one cell perfect, the other much smaller, sterile. Fruit a capsule. Seeds numerous.

Worldwide: 60 species occurring in the tropical Old World and South Africa
