Perennial herbs. Leaves opposite, petiolate. Inflorescence pedunculate, usually terminal, sometimes axillary. Bracts inconspicuous, lanceolate. Calyx tube shallow; lobes 5, lanceolate. Corolla 2-lipped; tube long, narrow, much longer than lobes; upper lip ligulate, emarginate; lower 3-lobed, broad. Disk cup-shaped. Stamens 2; staminodes 0. Ovary 2-locular with 2 ovules per loculus. Fruit clavate. Seeds black, rough, tuberculate, borne on retinacula. Worldwide: 15 species in the tropical Old World Botswana: 2 taxa. |
