Annuals (in ours). Leaves: lamina pectinate. Ligule a line of hairs. Inflorescence dense, cylindric, spike-like. Spikelets bisexual, 1-flowered, in clusters of 2-5 (2 in ours), lanceolate to ovate, awnless. Glumes dissimilar; lower a tiny hyaline scale or 0; upper as long as the spikelet, its nerves prominent and each bearing a row of stout hooked prickles. Lemma ± as long as the upper glume, ovate, membranous. Stamens 3. Worldwide: 7 species in the tropics Botswana: 4 taxa. |
