Shrubs or small trees; pubescence of simple hairs. Leaves petiolate, lamina mostly ovate, margins sub-entire. Inflorescence solitary at leaf nodes near branch ends. Flowers very large, usually fragrant, perfect, actinomorphic, 5-merous, calyx tubular, 5-lobed or spathaceous; corolla white, pink, red, greenish, yellow or orange, trumpet-shaped, mostly with 5 pointed teeth. Fruit capsules, unarmed, elongate or rotund, woody, indehiscent. Derivation of name: for Sebald Justinus Brugmans (1763-1819) Dutch physician and botanist. Worldwide: Species 6-10 in South America. Botswana: 1 taxon. |
