Erect annual or perennial herbs. Leaves entire, opposite on simple or branched stems. Inflorescence terminal or axillary bracteate thyrses, each bract subtending a bibracteolate; flowers sessile or pedunculate, spike-like, densely silky-hairy. Bracts persistent on the inflorescence axis. Perianth segments 5, narrow, 3-nerved, mucronate, hyaline-margined. Ovary uniovulate, somewhat compressed, delicate below. Fruit capsule scarcely compressed, the very delicate base more or less immersed in the indurate base of the partial inflorescence, with a firm to rather narrow, raised apical rim. Seeds with copious endosperm. Worldwide: Species 2, in Angola. Botswana: 1 taxon. |
