Bulbous herbs, sometimes dividing into clusters, usually with a sheathing neck round the leaf bases. Leaves usually appearing after flowering and contemporary with fruit. Flowers solitary to a spathe, several-many from a cluster of bulbs. Peduncle much reduced, included in the neck; spathe single, membranous. Perianth with a long, slender cylindric tube; lobes shorter than the tube, spreading. Fruit succulent, clavate, indehiscent, yellowish, aromatic, edible. Worldwide: About 10 species in South Africa and Namibia Botswana: 1 taxon. |
