Perennial herbs; root stock bulbous with thick, fleshy tunics or 2-ranked scales. Leaves 2 sometimes 1 or as many as 6; dry or green at flowering; erect to prostrate; lamina star-shaped to elliptic; often barred with dark green or red. Inflorescence umble, compact or spreading; spathe bracts 4 or more, often fleshy erect or spreading; red pink or white. Flowers actinomorphic, narrowly or broadly funnel shaped; erect or spreading; perianth tube short, cylindric or bell-shaped. Fruit usually fleshy, ovoid to globose; white, orange or pink; often aromatic when ripe. Seeds ovoid, fleshy; red, green or cream. Worldwide: c. 25 species in South Africa and Namibia with one species entering Botswana Botswana: 1 taxon. |
