Description of the genus

Inflorescence a contracted panicle. Spikelets 2–6-flowered; glumes subequal, as long as the spikelet; floret callus pungent; lemmas dorsally rounded, 9-nerved, with lines of short hairs between the nerves, each terminating above in a tuft of longer hairs, deeply 2-lobed at the apex, with a straight or geniculate awn in the sinus; palea shorter than the body of the lemma, ciliolate along the wingless keels.

Worldwide: 4 species occurring in North Africa, through southwest Asia to northern India and in southern Africa

Botswana: 1 taxon.
