Perennial herbs, dying back each year, with flat-based bell-shaped corms. Foliage leaves 1-several. Inflorescence usually a much-branched panicle or a simple to branched spike or flowers clustered at ground level. Flowers actinomorphic or zygomorphic, blue, purple, red, white or pink; tepals connate into a perianth tube, equal or subequal. Fruit a capsule. Derivation of name: Named in honour of Compte de la Peyrouse, 18th century French patron of science. Comment: Many species formerly placed under Lapeirousia have now been moved to Afrosolen. Worldwide: 27 species in subsaharan Africa, especially in the Southwestern coastal regions. Botswana: 3 taxa. |
