Unarmed trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, paripinnate; the rhachis sometimes winged. Inflorescence a short lateral or terminal panicle or raceme. Flowers red, showy, bisexual. Calyx lobes 4. Petals either 5 or (in brachypetala) with some or all reduced to linear filaments. Stamens 10, inserted with the petals, often alternately long and short. Pods oblong, flattened, woody, with a wing along one suture. Derivation of name: after Richard van den Schot (1733-1790) head gardener at Schönbrunn, Vienna. Worldwide: 5 species in southern Africa.
