Description:
A rhizomatous perennial, base surrounded by cataphylls. Culms 40–60 cm., erect, glabrous, nodes dark, glabrous. Leaf sheaths glabrous. Ligule c. 0.5 mm. long, truncate, shortly ciliate. Leaf laminae 5–10 × 0.2–0.4 cm., linear, flat, superior surface glabrous or loosely hairy near the ligule, inferior surface glabrous, sometimes scaberulous, smooth on the margins. Inflorescence composed of 1–2(3) racemes, (8)10–20 cm. long, erect, solitary along a short common axis. Rhachis triquetrous, narrowly winged, up to 0.3 mm. broad, smooth with scabrous margins. Pedicels 3-nate, 0.5–2.5 mm. long, subtriangular, scaberulous near the broadened apex, bearing a poorly developed coronula. Spikelets 2.5–3.0 mm. long, oblong-lanceolate. Inferior glume very short, ovate, truncate, nerveless, hyaline. Superior glume c. 1/2 of the spikelet, oblong-triangular, 3–5-nerved, glabrous or very loosely hairy, hairs white, capitate-apiculate. Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblonglanceolate with recurved margins, 7-nerved, the central and two pseudomarginal nerves well developed, glabrous or very loosely hairy. Superior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong-lanceolate, acute, dark brown.

Derivation of specific name: eylesii: named after Frederick Eyles (1864 - 1937)
Habitat: In wet vlei grassland, floodplains and dambos.
