Description:	Somewhat fleshy, papillose annual herb with prostrate or ascending stems up to c. 50 cm long radiating from the crown of a taproot, often reddish in this variety. Leaves opposite, fleshy, linear to narrowly oblong-ovate or narrowly obovate, up to 15 mm long, persistent in this variety during flowering time; leaf-base expanded with 2 stipular lobes; margin sometimes with minute papillose teeth. Flowers c. 3 mm long, sessile, densely crowded on short lateral branchlets, densely hispid. Perianth lobes with a brownish margin and a fleshy subapical murco; perianth-tube much shorter than lobes, obconical with 5 more or less prominent tubercles at the base of the sinuses between the lobes. Fruit with a prominent thickened ring around the lid.
Notes:	Though listed in Setshogo (2005) the occurrence of this variety in Botswana needs further investigation. See var. stenophylla and var. salsaloides for comparison.

Habitat:	In depressions on basalt and in black soils, at margins of riverine vegetations, on sandy and saline soils.
