Description: |
Erect succulent perennial to 30 cm with simple stems, only branching when damaged. Stems bearing closely spirally arranged rhomboid tubercles to 15 mm long with leaves at their apices. Leaves subsessile, up to 12 × 1.2 cm, linear-lanceolate, entire. Cymes in terminal umbels. Bracts c. 3 × 2 cm, deltoid. Glands 4-5, transversely elliptic with 3-6 finger-like processes on the outer margin. Capsule 8 × 11 mm, borne on an erect pedicel. |
Notes: | There is confusion over the spelling of the specific name with monteiroi being used by some authorities and monteiri by others. Although Leach (1979) defended the use of monteiri, we have adopted the name monteiroi as this seems to be generally accepted. |
Derivation of specific name: | monteiroi: named for Joachim Monteiro, a Portuguese colonial official and naturalist. |
