Description: |
Small deciduous tree with a swollen trunk. Bark peeling to reveal a mottled patch work of pale-grey, purple and creamy-green. Leaves fairly small, more or less 3-lobed, broadly ovate in outline, 5-7-veine from the base. Flowers on the old wood and on young branches, solitary or in few-flowered clusters, greenish-yellow, with conspicuous streaks of pink to red, appearing before the leaves. Fruit consisting of 3-5 beaked carpels, each splitting down one side, creamy to pale-brown velvety on the outside; mouth fringed with highly irritant hairs. Seeds black with a white aril. |
