Description:
Multi-stemmed small shrub up to 1 m high, growing from a thick rhizome or shrub up to 4 m tall with a short trunk up to 5 cm in diameter. Young branches covered in rusty hairs. Leaves alternate, elliptic-lanceolate to ovate, up to 13 × 7.5 cm, coriaceous, rusty hairy when young, mostly hairless when mature; margin with conspicuous glandular teeth. Flowers with the leaves, in 1-3-flowered axillary clusters, white to greenish-white. Capsule ovoid-subglobose, up to 2 cm long, covered in rusty hairs. Seeds c. 8 × 4 mm, ovoid, compressed, brown with an orange aril.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: brazzeana: named after Jacques de Brazza (1859-1888), French explorer and plant collector, who travelled together with his brother Pierre Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza in Gabon and the Congo.
Habitat: Woodland and thickets on Kalahari sand.
