Description:
Perennial herb 40–70 cm tall, sometimes with a creeping rhizome. Stem unbranched, erect. Leaves mostly clustered at the base, often with 1–3 pairs along the stem; basal ones oblanceolate to linear-spathulate, 9–30 cm long; the ones along the stem usually linear to linear-lanceolate, 2.5–14 cm long. Flowers in a terminal branched head on pedicels 1–3 cm long, magenta, rose-pink to red, rarely white. Corolla tube cylindric, 7–10 mm long; lobes oblong-lanceolate, 5–13 mm long. Capsule narrowly ovoid 9–12 mm long.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: krebsii: after Georg Ludwig Engelhard Krebs (1792-1844), German apothecary, naturalist, chemist, botanist and prolific collector in the Eastern Cape, Madagascar, Mauritania, and Réunion.
Habitat: In marshy ground.
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa.
