Description: |
Stiffly erect, much-branched, perennial herb, up to 40 cm tall, usually with a thick rootstock. Leaves narrowly linear-lanceolate or linear, 15-35 mm long, minutely puberulent to almost hairless; margin entire. Flowers solitary, axillary. Calyx 3-7.5 mm long with linear lobes, joined only at the base. Corolla 5-10.5 mm long, narrow at the base, much wider above, blue, purple or mauve;lobes subcircular. Capsule ovoid-oblong, 5-8.5 mm long, often pointed at the apex, minutely papillose, not markedly veined. |

Derivation of specific name: | lugardiae: named after Charlotte Eleanor Lugard-Howard, professional painter and plant collector who was married to Major Edward James Lugard. Both collected extensively in Botswana. |
