| Description: |
Shrub or small tree. Leaves opposite or in fascicles on small lateral spurs, obovate to oblanceolate, showing scattered linear or near-circular, dark bacterial nodules. Leaves have an unpleasant smell when crushed. Domatia absent. Stipules triangular, 2-5 mm. Flowers in terminal heads on leafless branchlets, white or cream, strongly scented. Corolla tube up to 1.5 cm long; lobes c. 7 mm long; style exserted up to 10 mm. Capsules in clusters, subspherical, shiny black, crowned with the persistent remains of the calyx. |
| Notes: | Two varieties are both widespread in Zimbabwe: var. gardeniifolia has the leaves, flowering branchlets and stalks hairless; var. subtomentosa K. Schum. has rough hairs on the leaves, stalks and branchlets. |
