Description: |
Tufted, decumbent or erect, perennial with short rhizomes. Culms robust, up to 2 m high; nodes exposed and densely bearded. Inflorescence of 2-many, subdigitate, shortly pedunculate racemes; culm below the inflorescence glabrous. Racemes with the lowest 1-6 spikelet pairs homogamous, male or neuter. Sessile spikelets: lower glume of the sessile spikelet is pubescent to pilose below the middle, with bulbous-based hairs confined to the margins above (var. annulatum); lower floret barren; upper floret stipitiform, awn c. 25 mm long. Pedicelled spikelets similar or slightly smaller than the sessile spikelet, male or neuter. Two varieties occur in our area. See var. papillosum for comparison. |
