Description: |
Shrub or small tree, often multi-stemmed; bark wine-red, smooth but becoming powdery. Leaves opposite, elliptic, 6-15 cm long, thinly textured, usually completely hairless but sometimes with a few scattered hairs; petiole 2-5 mm long; stipules with a base c. 2 mm long and an apendage 5 mm long; older stipule congested with a few hairs inside. Inflorescences axillary, more or less sparsely pubescent, 5-13-flowered, often appearing before the leaves are fully grown. Calyx with lobes narrowly oblong, up to 2 mm long. Corolla greenish-cream, hairy in the throat. Fruit subglobose, up to 2 cm in diameter, green to brownish, with a persistent apical ring left by the calyx. |
Notes: | Closely related to Vangueria proschii and considered a hairless variety of that species by some authors. |
