Description of the genus

Shrubs up to 2 m tall. Leaves imparipinnate. Inflorescence of 2-8-flowered racemes. Calyx campanulate, 5-lobed. Standard curved, emarginate; wings clawed, auriculate; keel also clawed and auriculate. Stamens in a sheath open on the upper side; vexillary stamen free. Ovary stipitate; style curved, bearded along the upper side, sometimes with a tuft of hairs just below the capitate stigma on one side.Pod membranous, bladder-like. Seeds black, flattened.

Derivation of name: Named after James Sutherland, ?1639-1719, first Superintendent of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden.

Worldwide: 6 species, mainly occurring in South Africa, but also in Namibia and Botswana.

Botswana: 2 taxa.
