Description:
Much branched, ascending and spreading annual, lower branches mostly long and decumbent, sometimes to 65 cm tall, usually much smaller; branches hispid, with rather long spreading hairs. Leaves 3-foliolate with leaflets linear-lanceolate to lanceolate or oblanceolate, mostly 1.5–7 cm long, lower ones sometimes elliptic or obovate, thinly appressed hairy beneath; petiole shorter than the leaflets; stipules 3–9 mm long, linear-lanceolate, caudate. Racemes up to 8–20 cm long, laxly few–many-flowered. Calyx 3–4.5 mm long; lobes acuminately triangular, longer than the tube. Standard subcircular, yellow, reddish-brown veined outside; wings shorter than the keel or more or less as long; keel 5–9 mm long, rounded below the middle, with a short straight or less commonly incurved beak. Pod sessile, subglobose-ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, 10–13 mm long, often mottled brown, pubescent.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: steudneri: after Dr. Hermann Steudner (1832-1863), German physician, botanist, explorer, and plant collector who worked in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Habitat: Mopane and dry deciduous woodland, rarely in miombo or disturbed places, often on seasonally damp sandy ground near streams, roads and dambos.
