Description:
Small to medium-sized deciduous tree. Branches reddish-brown, peeling in strips. Leaves crowded at the ends of branches obovate-elliptic, bluish-green above, paler below, often, but not always, densely covered in silvery hairs. Flowers in axillary spikes, pale-yellow to creamy-white. Fruit an oval nut surrounded by a flat wing. The fruits are often parasitised and form a deformed mass of thin galls (image 5).
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: sericea: with silky appressed hairs (sericeous)
Habitat: In a variety of types of open woodland, particularly in sandy soils. It may be one of the co-dominant species with Brachystegia, Mopane, Combretum or Acacia.

Worldwide distribution: Tanzania and DRC southwards to Angola and Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa
