Description:
Climber, sometimes shrub-like, up to 3·5 m. high, with numerous stems growing from a thickened and more or less fleshy, above ground basal part up to c. 1 m high and up to 0·4 m wide. Leaves suborbicular in outline, 2–12 cm long and wide, 5-lobed right down to the base, greyish, bluish or purplish-grey, 5-veined from the base; petiole 1–5 cm long; leaf-segments ovate to oblong, 1–7 cm long, with 4–8 pairs of lateral veins and rather distinct reticulation; margin entire. Glands at the leaf-base 2, 1–2 mm in diameter, running into fleshy, brownish auricles. Stipules triangular, 1–1·5 mm long. Tendrils up to 10 cm long. Inflorescences axillary at the base of tendrils, 2–5-flowered in male, 1–3-flowered in female on peduncles 1-2 cm long. Pedicels 2–20 mm long. Flowers pale yellowish-green. Capsule ellipsoid, 1·8–2·5 cm long, with a thickly leathery outer shell, 3–5-seeded.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: glauca: blueish-green or glaucous, referring to the colour of the leaves.
Habitat: In rocky places in dry bushveld.
